Starchild Suite (1992-93) For MIDI Computer, SWC 3
I. Images II. Stars III. Visions IV. Cosmic Serenade V. Galaxy Eclipse VI. The Black Hole VII. Auras VIII. Starchild
Starchild Suite is a collection of musical compositions that express feelings of not belonging on Earth but rather to a different world. Looking up at the stars, imagine being consumed with the feeling that somewhere out there is where you truly belong. You want to return home, but where is home? Out of place and time, all you can do is stare into space and hope one day to get back to where you belong. This is the mood Starchild Suite evokes.
Each of the pieces of the suite is a journey of the soul. Compositionally the music is inspired by the Renaissance period. A slight sound of medieval modes can be heard with a touch of contrapuntal melodies. Images is the first of the pieces in the collection. Here the soul has images of being in a different world. A world that is familiar to his inner self and one that is totally different than the place and time he lives. The next two pieces are written in the Renaissance Madrigal style with choral voices. These tunes take the soul outward to the journey into the different world that he is so familiar with. The next four pieces: Cosmic Serenade, Galaxy Eclipse, The Black Hole, and Auras are the travels through space and time. Each of the pieces is an adventure and story of its own. The journey is long but beautiful. He encounters many different souls, of whom he has a kindred experience in his life growing up. These as he discovers were people in his spiritual journey. They were all star children following their path back to where their soul originated.
The last piece, Starchild, is the end of the journey. The soul has returned home. Here he is surrounded by sweet sounds of flutes and cosmic magickal tones. He feels comfortable and happy. He has found his home and is now living what he was meant to be. In the middle of the piece a striking different mode appears, the pentatonic scale, a mode that is outside of the Western musical style. This is a discovery of the soul’s past lives. Who he was and what he did in certain past lives. The Pentatonic scale originated in the Far East, however it has found itself in many other cultures, especially Native American. Allow your imagination to flow where this soul has found and discovered within him. While there is a flow of the pentatonic scale, the creation of the modes and the Middle Ages and Renaissance continues to flow in this piece. Creating an ultimate gathering of the spiritual path of the starchild.
